DALI Logarithmic Dimming Levels

DALI is configured to provide dim levels from 0 % to 100 % to DALI units. To ensure that these levels remain consistent industry wide, DALI utilise a logarithmic dimming curve.

The DALI logarithmic dimming curve contains 255 individual 8 bit levels within the 0 % to 100 % range. Each individual level has a value on the dimming curve that relate to the power level of a DALI unit (i.e. DALI ballast). As the level increases, there are higher increments between each dim level. As a result, certain percentiles are omitted from the higher end of the dimming curve.

Thus, when querying DALI levels using Ethernet I/O, the Helvar router level may return a slightly different level than the level that you have set or can see in Designer (Designer uses all percentiles from 0 % to 100 %). The router has to assign the closest available level value according to the DALI logarithmic curve.
